Each year volunteers make it possible for us to help our neighbors in need. These volunteer contributions were honored June
10th at the Samaritan House Volunteer Recognition Event at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Foster City. Sammy awards were presented to: Bonnie Garcia,
Administration; Ron Wolyn, Bread Basket; Brenda Comacho, Client Services; Dr. Eirene Yu, Redwood City Dental Clinic; Dr. Alana Fitzgerald, San Mateo
Dental Clinic; Carla Fondrick, Development; The Grandmas, Dining Room; Annette Delaney and Silvia Tan, Finance; Heidi Higaki, Food Pantry; Joanne
Schunter, Holiday Assistance; Ally Nuschy and Cathy Brown, Kids Closet; Isabelle Aguja, Kitchen; Sri Sathya Sai Baba Center of San Bruno, Kitchen
Weekend; Sandy Treanor, Mobile Meals; Dr. Ward Hart and Martha Woodman, Redwood City Clinic; Tzu Chi Foundation, Safe Harbor, Dr. John Sarconi, Mary

James, Project Smile (RWCC); Bergen James, Project Smile (SMC). The Kelly Award, named for former Executive Director John Kelly, and the highest
volunteer honor, went to Shirley Alapati and the Shoreview United Methodist Church Youth Group.

Samaritan House Main Event Luncheon at the Peninsula Golf and Country Club
 The May 1st Main Event Luncheon at the Peninsula Golf and Country Club
featured an impressive guest list of community supporters and dignitaries. Among those attending were (l-r) Lory Lawson, Executive Director of
Leadership of the San Mateo Chamber of Commerce; Bob Grassilli, San Carlos City Council Member; and Ira Ruskin, California
Assemblymember, 21st District.
The May 1st Samaritan House Main Event Luncheon at the Peninsula Golf and Country Club featured a full house
of community supporters and dignitaries. Topping off the beatiful setting for the event, guests were treated to table top displays created by local designers.

Leticia Smiell honored at Latino/a Leadership Conference
 On April 9th, the President of Notre Dame de Namur University, Dr. Judith Maxwell Greig
(right), presented a plaque of recognition to Samaritan House Case Manager Leticia Smiell (left).
Leticia, who directs literacy programs for Samaritan House, was honored for her work with university students who teach Samaritan House clients. The plaque was presented during the university’s 1st Annual Latino/a Leadership Conference.

Legal Aid Society helps Safe Harbor residents with health care legal issues

Erica Pun, of Legal Aid of San Mateo County (front, left) provided legal aid grant orientation training March 8th to Safe
Harbor staff, including (front row) Azteca Valdez and Eric Brown, Safe Harbor Case Managers and (back row) Maryam Bhimji,
Safe Harbor Shelter Director; Jessica Escobedo, Safe Harbor Shelter Manager; and Jesse Graham, Safe Harbor Case Manager.
Recently Erica Pun of Legal Aid of San Mateo County saw the need for shelter residents to receive
legal help with health care access and medical debt. This led to a grant from Mills Peninsula Health Services to provide
12 months of assistance to Safe Harbor staff and residents. The goal is to help shelter residents reach the goal of
getting healthcare. The assistance provided by Legal Aid will include (1) monthly informational presentations to shelter
residents (2) advice to shelter case managers assisting clients with health care issues, and (3) legal assistance with
some individual cases, as appropriate.
